Normal tap and well water naturally contains small amounts of bacteria. These bacteria are not harmful, as they are harmless in themselves or occur in far too small numbers in drinking water.
As biofilm begins to form, bacteria settle in the pipes and hide beneath a protective slime layer that they produce themselves. Bacteria are also introduced into the water supply system from the livestock housing, where they settle within the biofilm. Within these biofilms, all kinds of bacteria – both beneficial and harmful – can multiply unchecked.
The problem with these biofilms arises from the intermittent release of large quantities of bacteria into the drinking water, as well as from the gradual build-up of biofilm within the pipes. This significantly reduces the water’s quality and can lead to disease in the animals.
The consequences are a deterioration in animal health, poor milk yield and an increase in treatment costs. Consequently, this leads to a decline in your farm’s profitability.
